 2022 Preview 


       Hillcrest completed the 2021 season with a 11-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region four, the Patriots earned a spot in the playoffs in 2021. Hillcrest made a nice playoff run in 2021, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Hueytown team by the score of 44-16.

       The 506 points scored by the Patriots last year were a team record in a single season.

       Since 2010, Hillcrest has gone a combined 100-45. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 6A over the past twelve seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Hillcrest has managed to compile a record of 166-121. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 6A and 112nd in the AHSAA.




       The Patriots are led by head coach Jamie Mitchell who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 11-3 record in his first season at Hillcrest. The Patriots saw improvement from a 9-3 record the season before coach Mitchell arrived. Under his direction the Patriots have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Mitchell.

       Coach Mitchell's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 15-11 (57.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Mitchell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

       The Hillcrest Patriots will play in Class 6A region four during the 2022 season.

       The Patriots enter the 2022 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak.

       The Patriots should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Patriots are making another deep run into the playoffs.

       The Patriots open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Pike Road on Friday, August 19 at Roy Johnson Jr. Stadium. Last year the Pike Road Patriots finished with an overall record of 14-0 and in first place in Class 5A region two. The Patriots won the Class 5A State Championship last season when they defeated Pleasant Grove by a score of 51-14 in the Super Seven finals in Birmingham.

       Hillcrest and Pike Road have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 2-0-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in with

       Hillcrest returns 6A All-State Senior quarterback Ethan Crawford. He was named to the second team last season.

Hazlewood won five consecutive state championships from 1988-1992. During this span the Golden Bears won 29 playoff games in a row.
